This goat is doing funky things to help out those who need it most. Communities in Mozambique can start with one and end up with a herd.
They can then be sold to raise cash for school fees, or tools. As part of Oxfam Australia’s commitment to the environment, goats are only provided to communities where goat keeping is a traditional way of life.
Oxfam also provide training in keeping animals, vaccination and de-worming. Goats are also groovy because in rural communities they eat household waste – getting rid of rubbish and unwanted scraps – and provide milk and manure as a bonus. “The distribution of goats through a revolving fund to orphans and other vulnerable children provides a source of income to allow them greater economic independence.”
- Charmaine Cônsul Gonçalves, Mozambique Program Coordinator, Oxfam Australia

In 1999, physician and surfer Dr. Dave Jenkins went on a surf charter to the Mentawai Islands with one goal in mind: to find perfect waves. The surf proved to be everything he had hoped for. What he also found, though, were the Mentawai people - mostly women and children - suffering and dying from the ravages of malaria and other preventable diseases.
Troubled by the inequity of lifestyles and moved by compassion, Dr. Jenkins went on to establish SurfAid International, a non-profit organization dedicated to the alleviation of human suffering through community-based health programs. With the support of the New Zealand and Australian governments, the global surfing community, and most importantly the Mentawai people of the affected areas themselves, SurfAid has come to exemplify the healing power of cross-cultural partnerships.

Braddo: "In February I was in Padang, Sumatra, chasing the impossibly perfect waves of the nearby Menawai Islands. Six months later the city was flattened by an epic earthquake."
CERES (the Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies, pronounced 'series') is an internationally recognised model of a sustainable society located in Melbourne, Australia. CERES shares its name with the Roman Goddess for agriculture.
CERES is located on 4.5 hectares (10 acres) on the banks of the Merri Creek, in East Brunswick, close to the centre of Melbourne. CERES runs on renewable energy, is a 55 tonne carbon sink, conserves and recycles its water and waste, grows organic food; and teaches diverse audiences about more than just environmentally friendly ways of living. What makes the CERES concept particularly compelling is that sustainability initiatives are located in a participatory social setting which, over time, has created a village-like environment, made up of a melting pot of different audiences.

Brainstorming festive gift ideas we systematically purged the clichéd food hamper, booze and kan-kan girls. What lay sweetly before us were a half-dozen beautiful - though logistically impossible gifts (including a very real and live goat). Hmm... where to from here?
A week later, it dawned... If we give 'em nothing, it'll mean everything!
The goat idea has legs!
The selected charities are close to our hearts, close to our world or close to the people we do business with. We've allocated a total gift donation of $3,000.00 which we'll allocate across the charities according to how you choose to re-gift.
Enjoy your plastic goat, it's all we're giving you!
Merry Christmas from Brad & Paul, Nick, Kath, Raoul, Steve, Eiran, Rob, Cory, Sharon, Jane, Holly, Mike and Anthony.
Steal the Goat: In the spirit of giving, if you like our little idea and would like to borrow it for your own charitable cause, then email I'm Stealing The Goat and we'll make it happen.
